How Close Have You Been to a Killer? (pt1)

It was a dark & stormy night. Really, it was. Dave and I were riding out the severe weather from our 4th floor room at a local Chalet. Other guests in the hotel included: Kane Hodder aka Jason from Friday the 13th, Tony Todd aka The Candyman, Brad Loree aka Michael Myers from Halloween, and Bill Johnson aka Leatherface from Texas Chainsaw Massacre. How this happened to come to be wasn’t so important that night, only that it was. Lightening flashed, thunder crashed, the electric went out. OH HELL NO. I reminded Dave of the cardinal rules I’ve screamed at the TV many times. 1) You do not have sex. (we were safe there) 2) You do not go out to investigate 3) and for the love of all that’s holy, you do not ever go into the basement!! One scenario I had not thought of until then, was several murderers hanging out outside my hotel room and a tornado comes. WTF? Seriously?  What do we do? Try not to pee. We laid in the darkness (no power, remember) and oddly, just fell asleep. Luckily, before the storm, Dave & I were having drinks with Seka -the porn queen, and the cast of Angry Young Men LTD (zombie puppet show puppeteers) and had such a good time it wasn’t hard to fall asleep in the darkness of our room. Of course, I slept with one ear open. Any chainsaw sound and I was pretty sure I was making a run for it.

How did I get myself into this predicament? I got a press pass to Con-tamination 2011! I’m not going to lie, I applied for the press pass because Billy F Wirth told me he was planning on going. Alas, he had other commitments, that had absolutely nothing to do with the obsessed stalker from MO I promise, or prior engagements. When I learned he wasn’t going to attend, I panicked. I hate horror! Completely utterly terrified of anything remotely scary! *whew, slow deep breaths*  Luckily Dave is my photographer, and while I interviewed people, he would whisper encouragement and occasionally give me a sharp shove in the direction of the killer.

Ok, the killers….. but wait! First there were a ton of other amazing people there!

I got an awesome interview with Veronica Hart who really liked my line of questioning and said it was refreshing to get something new. (aw, thanks) She’s very intelligent and we talked quite a while about the honesty of porn and women in society. (I think Dave might have the hug pic already made into a poster)

The other adult film star in attendance was the wonderful Seka! She was a riot and super fun to be around! I loved her honest answers to my questions, and you can tell her industry was completely a part of her life. She put on no airs, she is all the time, simply…  Seka.

One evening as we were drinking sitting around the table exchanging stories, a guy in a huge monster outfit came over. Somehow, thank you traitor husband, the table became aware of my intense fear of scary objects/mascots/things that kill. (seems perfectly reasonable to me) Well, Seka has him come over to the table and sit down with his mask off and tells me to look at him for awhile. I tried to take a picture, but she shot that down too. “Just LOOK at him” she said. As I withdrew into my head, I had to appreciate such a surreal moment. One of the top porn stars of all times is trying to help me overcome one of my fears. And it worked! (for that particular monster. I make no promises or pretenses about any future monsters/mascots/killers/ or fish) From then on she wasn’t Seka the porn star, she was Seka, my friend. A friend who can tell a dirty joke like no other and can make a hilarious sexual euphemism about anything! I miss her already!

Con-tamination also had an amazing amount of vendors selling anything you could possibly want that pertained to horror/sci-fi. Among the comic books, videos, and jewelry, we saw zombie barbies, gummy candy brains, and faux intestines. Directors, writers, and producers. Not to mention the guy walking around with the live snake. *shudder* no, we won’t mention him.

The other celebrities hanging out were: The Boondock Saints, The Original Fantastic 4, Dan Shore from Tron, Sandahl Bergman the Barbarian Queen “Valeria” and Ben Davidson “Rexor” both from Conan The Barbarian. You know, I didn’t realize how many celebrities they had until I had to type it out! Anyway, let’s see…., Cody Deal from Almighty Thor, Some of the stars from Jackass, several members from Day of the Dead, G Tom Mac and of course Dr. Ivan Cryptosis….

I’ll get part 2 written up this weekend! (Or as soon as I feel like it.) Part 2 will bring it right back around to the killers. I did interview them. Most of them. One scared me too much to talk to. Who do you think it was?  I’ll publish your name on this blog if you get it right! Hint, it’s one from the 1st paragraph.

There were too many people to interview, I had to narrow it down to the types of articles I wanted to write. As for those, I can’t publish them here as I’m trying to query magazines to get them printed. Keep your fingers crossed. That would be too exciting to share that a magazine bought them!

The BEST part of the weekend? People watching! The outfits, the interactions, it was fantastic! As you can tell, I overcame my terror hesitation, and had a great time. Although actually, the terror hesitation doesn’t really come into play until part 2. Stay tuned…
